Counselling in the United States

Every session is held by secure video, so where you sit is up to you. What matters is that you tell us where that is, because it decides who is able to work with you.

Matching within days. We work here by matching you with a counsellor registered where you live. Send us a note and we will confirm availability, usually within two working days.

Who is allowed to work with you

Counselling is licensed state by state in the US, and the rules are enforced. Your counsellor must hold a licence in the state where you are sitting — an LPC, LMHC, LPCC, LCSW, LMFT or licensed psychologist, depending on the state. We match you to someone licensed in your state rather than working around it. Psychologists practising across state lines may do so through PSYPACT, and the Counseling Compact is extending something similar to professional counsellors.

We will tell you which registration your counsellor holds and give you the number, so you can check it against the register yourself before you book. If you would rather not take that on trust, you shouldn't have to.

Paying, and whether anything comes back

Many US plans reimburse out-of-network counselling. Ask your insurer for your out-of-network mental health benefit and your annual maximum, then ask us for a superbill — an itemised receipt with your counsellor's licence number and the diagnosis and procedure codes your insurer needs. Some plans require a diagnosis on file, which is worth knowing before you start.

You'll know what a session costs before you book it, never after. If cost is what's stopping you, say so — we hold a small number of reduced-fee places and nobody will ask you to justify the request.

Time zones

You are in all US time zones. We confirm your local time in writing before your first session, because a mix-up discovered at six in the morning is nobody's idea of a good start.

If you need help now

Call 911 in an emergency. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline takes calls and texts at any hour. Crisis Text Line: text HOME to 741741. The Trevor Project for LGBTQ young people: 1-866-488-7386.

We are not a crisis service and cannot respond urgently or out of hours, anywhere. More options are on our crisis page.

What we work with

The same work, wherever you are

Trauma Therapy

When something overwhelming happens, your body does what it needs to do to get you through it, and then doesn't always switch off afterwards. We work with that directly, at whatever pace you can manage.

EMDR Therapy

EMDR helps your mind finish processing something it couldn't process at the time. It's one of the most researched trauma treatments there is, and it usually asks far less of you than telling the story over and over.

ADHD Therapy

You've probably tried the apps and the planners already. We'll build the practical side with you, and we'll also work on what tends to go unaddressed: the years of assuming you should find all this easier.

Learn more →

Anxiety & Depression

Anxiety and depression are usually how something else shows up on the surface. Your symptoms are real and worth treating, and we'd rather work with what's driving them than teach you to live around them.

Learn more →

Grief & Loss

Grief doesn't follow a schedule and it rarely looks the way you expect. Nobody here will hurry you through it or hand you a set of stages to work along.

Couples Therapy

Most couples aren't really arguing about the thing they're arguing about. We help you see what's actually happening between you when it escalates, and what it would take to change it.
